Village Nurseries

Village tree nurseries play a vital role in environmental conservation and restoration. They help increase the tree cover in rural areas, promoting biodiversity and providing habitats for pollinators and other species. Tree nurseries contribute to carbon sequestration and they support soil conservation, prevent erosion, and improve water quality. They can also generate income for local communities.

North Swaka Trust supports the growth of village tree nurseries by providing seeds, training and a market for the tree seedlings grown. Tree seedlings are dispersed to communities living around the Forest Reserves contributing to reforestation in the area. Through training local communities in how to plant and care for trees, the project provides practical learning experiences about plant propagation, nursery management, and the importance of trees in the environment.

In 2022, NST’s village nurseries grew 9,000 tree seedlings which were planted in the communities living around the Forest Reserves, generating income for those involved in the nurseries and increasing tree cover in the area.
