Swaka Stoves

North Swaka Trust’s fuel-efficient stove design, the Swaka Stove, can be built with 40 bricks, one sack of sand, one sack of anthill clay and a 100mm pipe. It’s simple to build and can save up to 2 tonnes of firewood per year when compared with traditional cooking methods, using only small sticks for fuel. The Swaka Stove also cooks faster than a traditional fire and is safer as the stove keeps the fire away from young children. It’s healthier too as it reduces smoke inhalation and injuries from carrying large pieces of wood.

Swaka Stove training is part of our Conservation Farming Project and in addition, we provide training in building and using the stoves to communities, commercial farms and interested individuals across the district. To date, over 1000 Swaka Stoves have been built saving an estimated 2000 tonnes of firewood every year.
